British government has placed an additional eleven new nations to its official warning list regarding the risks of methanol toxicity from adulterated beverages.

This expanded advisory covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after evidence showing "a worldwide rise in the frequency of confirmed occurrences" of toxic alcohol contamination.

Just last month, the government had already included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing list, after several notable cases such as the tragic death of six travelers in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being warned that as little as minimal doses of industrial alcohol can result in vision loss or loss of life within 12 to 48 hrs.

What is Toxic Alcohol and How is it Utilized?

Methanol is a poisonous chemical commonly employed in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and paint solvent. This substance is not intended for ingestion.

Although it is inherently formed during the creation of beverages, licensed producers lower it to non-dangerous concentrations for ingestion through the purification method.

But in some countries, it is surreptitiously added into beverages to reduce expenses, and as it is tasteless and smell-free, it is impossible to notice.

Authorities' Guidance for Tourists

Authorities representative the minister said that all travellers should be aware of the indicators of methanol toxicity.

"If you're consuming alcohol abroad, choose reputable establishments and avoid homemade alcohol or complimentary drinks," Falconer said.

"Should anything appears suspicious, like a hangover that's much more severe than normal or vision problems – seek medical attention right away."

The full register of countries identified as carrying a threat of industrial alcohol contamination presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
