England's First-Choice Batsmen Miss Pink-Ball Practice Game
England's primary batsmen have opted to skip a day-night tour match in the capital, despite a comprehensive loss in the first Ashes Test in Perth.
The tourists were beaten within two days in the first Test, leaving an extended break ahead of the upcoming day-night Test in Queensland.
The break opened up the option for squad members to join the England Lions 48-hour day-night fixture versus a invitational side in Canberra on Saturday and Sunday.
However, just fast bowlers one bowler and another bowler, plus batter a young player – all of whom featured in the first Test – will travel and link up with the Lions.
It is understood that none of the Perth XI requested to play in the Canberra fixture.
Ex- England Star Calls Move "Unusual"
Upon learning the team were considering dispatching players to Canberra for the development squad game, it was expected they would send those in need of practice.
The former England fast bowler and lead analyst added:
England must take charge of how they prepare and how they perform on the field. They are responsible for giving it their best shot of winning the series. The real test will be in the eating.
Missed Chance for Day-Night Practice
This match against the Prime Minister's XI has long been customary for touring sides to Australia.
England participated in the game in past Ashes tours, but was left out from their plans on this occasion because of a possible short gap to the next Test had the first match had lasted the full duration.
The flight from Perth to the capital requires just under four hours, with a additional 120-minute flight between Canberra and Brisbane.
Yet, given the opening match finished in just two days – the first 48-hour Test in the series in over a century – the idea of dispatching some of the batsmen to Canberra seemed to make sense.
Performance Struggles in First Test
- The tourists dismissed in both innings in Perth in under 68 overs.
- It's been since the early 1900s has the team survived so few balls in a defeat in a Test.
- Each of captain Ben Stokes and former captain Joe Root failed to reach double figures in both innings.
- Zak Crawley became only the fourth English opening batsman to record a pair in an Ashes Test.
The side played only one practice game before the first Test, meaning the fixture in the capital could have offered valuable time in the middle.
Rare Pink-Ball Test Ahead
In addition, the development game would have offered experience using the pink ball, with England set to face a unusual day-night Test.
The tourists have lost 5 of their seven prior day-nighters, while the hosts have won thirteen from 14.
With Mitchell Starc, who took a ten-wicket haul in the first Test, Australia boast the best pink-ball bowler in the game.
Among the probable line-up in Brisbane, gloveman one player and fast bowler another are yet to experience a red-ball game using a day-night ball, while a third has played only one.
Team Management Position
Asked after the Perth match if the team would change their plans and dispatch players to the capital, the skipper remained firm they would not.
This question has come up a lot, that's how it was done a long time ago. Our preparations incredibly well and train incredibly hard every day we get the opportunity.
Coach the coach seemed to suggest flexibility when he said:
We've just got to work out what the pros and cons are. We're not married to a fixed plan at the moment, but we'll decide soon.
McCullum continued that he was "sure" a batter could play in the capital if he wanted to.
Concerns from Former Captain
Commenting on Saturday, ex-skipper a well-known figure stated it would be "amateurish" to pass up the opportunity to participate in Canberra.
What harm is it playing 48 hours of cricket using the pink ball in evening conditions?
He continued:
It's hard to believe so traditional to propose that by getting match practice they could become slightly improved?
My method would be, there's a pink-ball two-day game, you go and grab it, go and take it, participate fully and give yourself the optimal preparation.
England are scheduled to fly to Brisbane on Wednesday and do not plan to practice before the start of the week. Exists the chance of an additional practice at the weekend.
