Former Federal Bureau of Investigation head James the former director has entered an innocent plea to making false statements to lawmakers and hindering a lawmaking procedure.

His lawyer entered the plea on his behalf in a US district court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday.

His attorney stated he would try to have the case terminated for multiple causes including that his client, a detractor of President Donald Trump, was being singled out.

Mr Comey was formally accused just days after Donald Trump urged his chief prosecutor to proceed against him.

Judicial Process

At the proceedings on mid-week, Comey's lawyer Mr Fitzgerald advised the judge they aimed to submit several legal requests to terminate the legal matter before a legal hearing, stating the legal action was vindictive and that a government lawyer was unlawfully assigned to assume control of the case.

The former director's case was initially managed by the original attorney, who stepped down under pressure from Donald Trump after his examination into an additional political adversary - NY AG Letitia James - failed to file indictments.

Judicial Environment

James Comey seemed in good spirits as he walked into the courtroom on mid-week, conversing with his legal team and sharing humor. He was supported by his wife, his wife and daughter his daughter, a federal prosecutor who the Trump administration terminated.

Following the reading to the judge recite his constitutional guarantees and the pair of allegations against him in the courtroom on mid-week, the defendant was questioned if he grasped the allegations.

"Yes your honour. Thank you very much," he told the court.

Previous Events

James Comey was the FBI Director from 2013-2017 and was terminated about several months into Trump's first administration as president. At the period, Mr Comey was overseeing an examination into international campaign influence and whether there were any connections between Russia and Trump's campaign.

While in office, Mr Comey sparked a counter-response from the Democratic party when he announced just immediately preceding the 2016 presidential election that he was probing political contender Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Charges against Hillary Clinton were not filed, leading to criticism from the Republican party as well.

Ongoing Accusations

Government attorneys claim James Comey provided false information to US lawmakers during a legislative proceeding in September 2020 when he was being interrogated about both the email probe as well as the election interference investigation. They allege he misled the legislative body by stating he had not authorized an individual at the FBI to disclose to journalistic entities details about the agency probes.

Legal representatives also allege James Comey of "wrongfully trying to affect, block and slow" the committee by providing untrue information to it.

Individual Responses

Via social media the former director shared to his Instagram after he was indicted, he stated he was wrongly accused and accused Trump of behaving like a "autocrat".

"Our household have known for years that there are ramifications to opposing Donald Trump," he stated. "We will not live on our bended knee."
"I'm innocent," he continued. "Therefore proceed with a legal proceeding."

The accusations against Mr Comey came after Donald Trump published on digital channels calling for his chief prosecutor, Ms Bondi, prosecute James Comey and others.
