In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The September revolt was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the New Political Agreement
According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Government Consultations Taking Place
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
