Teenager Found Deceased After False Allegations of Stealing Cremated Remains
One teenage boy was found dead only a few days following being wrongly blamed of stealing the ashes of a deceased baby during a break-in, a coroner's inquiry has learned.
Tragic Finding
Kai Lloyd's parents discovered his body in his bedroom at his Connah's Quay home on November 19th, 2021.
Untrue Allegations Begin
The inquest learned how his mother got a message on November 8th, 2021 via online platforms, from a individual inquiring if her son was her offspring. The communication stated: "Inform him appreciation for burgling my flat."
In a statement presented to the proceedings, Lisa Lloyd said the individual had been in the media, claiming her infant's ashes had been taken in a break-in - a allegation which was false.
Police Inquiry
An investigation report from police later determined the alleged break-in victim had "lied to police" and "it now appears that said items was never taken in the first place".
Media reports about the supposed taken remains generated online comments, and although the teenager was not identified in the posts, his mother said individuals "understood it was him".
The "online posts were extremely distressing", she said.
Emotional Health Impact
She explained that Kai had been diagnosed with moderate ADHD, and as part of that disorder, other individuals' opinions genuinely were important to him.
"This must have affected him severely," she said, "particularly when this was not true".
Kai was detained at home, but nothing was discovered. He was taken to a law enforcement facility and later freed under investigation.
Authorities said they would be in contact, the inquest learned, but had failed to contacted the family by the time of his passing.
Isolation and Worry
His mother said her son "became isolated" after the arrest and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had received anything from the police", because his ADHD meant sometimes "a minute could feel like days".
When she spoke to him about the supposed burglary, she said her child informed her he had gone into the residence because the woman who resided there had said he could use the bathroom anytime he wanted, but refuted taking anything.
Digital Bullying
In a combined testimony between her and her spouse, Mrs Lloyd said her child was being harassed digitally after the accusations.
The proceedings learned that one young adult encouraged Kai to kill himself.
She had no worries on the evening before he died, describing how she had listened to him "chuckling and joking".
She described him as a "compassionate, affectionate" young man, and said her "family is completely shattered".
He had been "obviously hiding his worries", she said, adding that he could not bear to have anyone "have negative thoughts of him".
Educational Response
The inquest received testimony from educational personnel at the local secondary school.
On November 8th, she "overheard some boys discussing that Kai had been detained and that was the first I heard".
"He told me... he'd done nothing wrong," she continued.
After the conversation, the educator said she rang the family's parents' landline and provided a voicemail saying she had spoken to the student about the accusations.
The proceedings heard his family said they did not receive that message.
Official Conclusion
Senior coroner informed the hearing he would wait for reports regarding what improvements had been made to handling suspects with the condition, before deciding whether he should make a avoidance of subsequent deaths report.
Delivering a narrative conclusion, he said: "Around 8 November 2021, unsupported accusations were made against the teenager, a 14-year-old individual.
"Likely falsehoods were subsequently embellished and amplified through the platform of social media.
"During November 11th, he was interviewed by the authorities and after his interview he was freed while investigations continued."
The coroner concluded: "There is no proof that the actions or omissions of any agency caused or contributed to his passing and although it was the outcome of a self-inflicted action it is impossible to discern his intent."
